Lamenting the Robot Guitar Commentary
A member of Long Island’s indie/emo scene will call it quits on Monday, Aug. 6th, after a final hurrah at Great Neck’s Sky Lounge. Eleven to Your Seven, a Nassau-based quartet, have captured local teens’ attention since Sept. with simple melodies and boyish lyrics that narrated the pangs of youth and nostalgia on Long Island. The members will be parting ways in August on good terms, as lead singer Adam Alter heads to Columbia College in Chicago to study audio recording.
The last show, billed as “Eleven to Your Seven: The Finale,” will feature a total of eight acts. Some bands, like The Farewell Effect and The Sweaters were invited to perform in light of their friendship with the members of Eleven to Your Seven. “We just wanted to have a good vibe with us,” said Alter.
Eleven to Your Seven has had plenty of opportunities to make friends, playing an estimated twenty local shows since their inception less than a year ago. In that time, they’ve managed to build a local following. “We’ve had more of a fan base than we’ve had in any other band,” said Alter. “It was really surprising when people starting coming to our shows and everything. It was really cool.”
The band began as a collaboration between Alter and guitarist John McKeever after their previous band, Hello Operator, dissolved. By Sept. 2006, they had added Michael Crawbuck on drums and Kenny Russo on bass.
“I have no problem with them continuing this band without me,” said Alter, regarding McKeever, Russo and Crawbuck, who will be seniors and a sophomore in high school, respectively, in Sept. Currently, the band is considering recording a few last songs for their own keepsake. “Just to have them out there,” said Alter, “even if we’re not around.”
Eleven to Your Seven’s brief existence reflected the themes transmitted by their music; the honest, naïve warble of a bunch of kids striving to sound like Saves the Day and Jimmy Eat World but achieving the imperfect, unpolished sentimentality of heroes like Cap’n Jazz and The Get Up Kids. The experience will exist as a teenage dream in the memories of the band members and those who happened to catch them while they were around.
“It’s had its ups and downs,” said Alter of his experiences as part of Long Island’s music scene. “It’s been pretty good. I don’t know what I would have done with myself if I hadn’t been involved with it, so it’s been a good time.”
The final show will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Sky Lounge, at 26 Great Neck Road in Great Neck, on Aug. 6.
