Bedtime for Brezhnev Studio is behind the project - here is their interior, where the magic happened
Since May, a massive Long Island music compilation has been brewing right under our noses. Bedtime for Brezhnev Studio, a Huntington operation run by technician/musicians Chris Davies and Tom Kelly, has spent the summer recording exclusive tracks from thirteen local bands. Right now, the CD is in the mixing phase – Kelly and Davies are looking to release it around Thanksgiving weekend.
The compilation represents a wide array of Long Island styles – the ska of The Homecoming Queens and Drop it Jeffrey, the punk of Worth Street Station and the more experimental rock of Post Roman, We Meet Under Tables and the late Daydream Radio. “Pretty much the only thing we don’t have is hip hop,” Davies said (they actually almost did).
The recording process was long and labor-intensive, but yielded some memorable moments. “Daydream [Radio] was fun to record,” Davies said, “because Tony [the drummer] is an absolute monster.” The track order is tentative for now, but Post Roman is a strong contender for the closer: “Their track on the comp was probably the most ridiculous,” Davies said.
Davies and Kelly chose to record bands they were already acquainted with, or their favorites from Myspace scouting expeditions. Their goal was to collect artists that stood out from the rest of Long Island’s scene. “A bunch of the music scene around here is boring to me at this point,” Davies said. “Not that many bands seem to take chances.”
But Davies was impressed by the artists he worked with this summer. “There does seem to be a definite sense of community in the bands that came to record,” he said. “Honestly, I’d like to do it again. I’d definitely like to make it like a regular thing.”
The tentative track list:
The Homecoming Queens - "Summer Song"
Daydream Radio - "Dirty Baby Blueberry"
Post Roman "The Emperor"
Show Me Action - "Untitled"
We Meet Under Tables - "The Liberty Bell Is Cracked"
Worth Street Station - "Why Is There Silverware In The Pancake Drawer?"
Romeo Romeo - "Comin' Home"
Signal Grey - "Malevolent Me"
Drop It Jeffrey - "Graber Thinks He's In The Rat Pack"
Killing Timothy In 4/4 - "Christie Since '86"
Unnamed Project featuring Chris Davies, Tom Kelly and Eddie Laguna - "Henry Kissenger As ‘Doc’"
The Skasmonauts - "A Pirate Is a Robber Who Attacks Ships"
Tom Kelly and Shawn Taylor - "Garden"
