Musing on My Bloody Valentine's Alleged Album

Kevin Shields, that elusive and ingenious guitar player for shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine, has stated on many occasions that “Loveless” would not be their final album. Will this elusive follow-up ever come to fruition? Or will Shields continue his reign of terror as (DUM DUM DUM) the financial foil of any record label that did not realize the magnitude of his insanity?

My Bloody Valentine was formed in 1984, by Queens native Kevin Shields and drummer Colm O’Ciosoig. Best known for their final LP, “Loveless,” which has gone down as one of the most expensive albums ever created, costing an alleged five hundred thousand U.S. dollars (250,000 Pounds). MBV left all of us, who are only now ripe enough in age to understand their awesomeness, with a large hole. Finally we may see that hole filled (minds out of the gutter kids!).

Shields has said that, barring the deaths of its members, MBV would produce another album. Continuing sessions that were abandoned from 1995, the band is hoping to release a new album this year. I find this highly doubtful, since Shields has been saying this for as long as I can remember. Much to my surprise, though, the band has announced UK dates and a few festival dates in Glasgow. It’s almost enough for me to get off my ass and get a job to see them. Almost.

I do believe MBV will someday release another album. I’m not sure how much I trust these crazy bastards to get it out in ‘08. I could be wrong though. This new album is supposedly going to be a continuation of sessions from 12 years ago. So something tells me that these songs might be complete after a dozen years. No one but Shields will ever know for sure. The fact that the original line-up is reuniting does leave me a little silly in the shorts. Will I actually get to see My Bloody Valentine in this lifetime? Are we seeing somewhat of a noise rock revolution?

At times I forget how much of a weirdo I am, and I forget that people have no idea who the hell I’m talking about. Fellow nerds, however, can see the significance of this event. I’m sure that they too are wondering if the masses have finally grown weary with the “music” MTV has to offer them.

Can anyone say “wall of sound?”
