Permanent Me Rock the Crazy Donkey

Though they may not be the most original pop-punk band from Long Island, Permanent Me still gets the job done. With both a new record and an opening spot on the Fall Out Boy tour earlier this year, Permanent Me have done pretty well for themselves.

This past Sunday, Aug. 19, Permanent Me started off their next tour at the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY. I walked in after most of the local bands had played and found the room to be much less crowded than I expected. Granted, it was a Sunday and it had been pouring all day but the openers who I did get to see were definitely worth mentioning: The Rivalry, also from LI, and Scenes From A Movie, from West Virginia.

Permanent Me began their set with the powerful and catchy song “Christine,” and continued throughout the night with other tracks from their album “After The Room Clears.” My only qualm about this band is that they play the same songs every time I see them. However, they seem to possess all the necessary qualities from a band of their standing: good stage presence, a close relationship amongst each other and with their fans - members posed for pictures throughout the night happily signing every piece of paper teenage girls held in their hands.

And looking straight at the stage you would never have noticed the lack of people in the room. Permanent Me played with tons of energy throughout each chorus and verse of every song. Fans packed up against the stage, arms waving and mouths mimicking Brian Kaplers’ vocals. That night, Kapler introduced the new bass player to the crowd, Arthur Fleischmann, for those who didn’t already know who he was. In familiar Permanent Me fashion, they ended their set with “Allison,” and said goodnight. They’ll be on this tour for the rest of September but will undoubtedly return to Long Island in the near future because, well, who wouldn’t?

Ummm it is pretty easy to tell the difference.

not to me. all these emo bands are cut from the exact same mold.

If you can't tell the difference between Permanent Me and Envy on the Coast I feel really bad for you. They have two distinctly different sounds. Had you said Envy on the Coast sounds too much like Saosin or Circa Survive I would have understood, though disagreed with the comment. Truth is Envy just put out a nasty album. It's a shame that you're too wrapped up in the current trend of being above anything that is even mildly associated with "emo" (a term that means nothing anymore anyways)to actually listen to bands on an individual basis. But hey if you're able to trick yourself into thinking that your musical taste stems from some higher knowledge by doing so, have fun with that...
